Folder vs Mountain Duck
Both put Cloudflare R2 buckets in Finder. They differ in how you sign in, what is kept, and what else they connect. This compares Folder in your Cloudflare; a folder on Folder needs no R2 at all.
| Mountain Duck | Folder, in your Cloudflare | |
|---|---|---|
| Connects to | Servers and many kinds of cloud storage, R2 among them | Your Cloudflare R2 buckets |
| Signs in with | An R2 access key and the R2 profile | Your Cloudflare sign-in; you pick the buckets |
| In Finder | A disk, or synced through File Provider in integrated mode | A folder under Locations, through File Provider |
| A deleted file comes back | R2 keeps no history of its own | Every overwrite and delete kept |
| Price | A license for one major version, any number of your computers | Cloudflare's bill, usually $0 |
| Runs on | Mac and Windows | Mac and the web; the iPhone app is not in the App Store yet |
Mountain Duck
Mountain Duck, from the makers of Cyberduck, “lets you mount server and cloud storage as a disk in Finder on macOS”, and in Explorer on Windows. Its integrated mode syncs through macOS’s File Provider. A license is “valid for one specific major version”, for any number of computers used by the same person.
Moving From Mountain Duck
The buckets stay where they are. Get Folder for Mac, choose In Your Cloudflare, sign in to Cloudflare and tick the buckets you had in Mountain Duck. Each appears in Finder under Locations, with its history from then on. The R2 access key Mountain Duck used is not needed.
